| Policy regarding the granting of training hours for implementation of curriculum: |

The Registry is occasionally asked whether hours can be obtained for implementing curriculum. The answer to this question is no; the Registry does not issue child care training hours for the implementation of curriculum. Implementing curriculum is viewed as a function of a job in Early Care and Education and outside the bounds of what is considered "training". In most cases, curriculum books and materials are discovered via the internet, the library, a store, a colleague or some other means. In most cases, the material is read through and activities are implemented. There typically is not any type of feedback offered from the author of the materials, any "assignments" or activities that assess whether the activities are being implemented correctly, and there generally isn't a standardized way to grant hours for reading/researching curriculum philosophies and ideas (a certificate isn't typically issued by anyone). Though the Registry has been made aware of several companies advertising that hours can be earned when purchasing their curriculum books, these companies and their products have not been approved by the Registry; these companies are selling a product, not offering training. This is not to be confused with training that is offered by a trainer in a traditional classroom setting. In this case, the Registry will approve training that is focused on curriculum ideas, etc.; the difference being that is it being offered in person with the intent to teach caregivers how to implement the ideas presented. | Policy regarding the granting of training hours for "stand alone" books and videos: |

The Registry does not grant training hours for reading a stand alone book and/or for viewing a video ("stand alone" meaning a material that is not part of a training, not being offered by an organization as a correspondence course, etc.. Most commonly, stand alone books and videos are found at local libraries). The approval of such materials was discontinued when the Registry took on the training approval system in October 2004. Since that time, hundreds of non-traditional (self-paced, independent study) options have been posted to the online calendar of training; all of which have gone through the approval process and are tied to the issuance of a certificate for completion of a set of predetermined requirements. As of January 2008, the Caring 4 Kids modules will be processed by University of Nevada Cooperative Extension (no longer the Office of Early Care and Education) and there will be a $10 fee per person/per module. Click here for more information. Posted 10/30/07 |

| Did you know that a 1 credit ECE college course is equal to 15 child care training hours? |

Individuals
working in licensed child care settings must complete 15 hours of training
on an annual basis.Take
an ECE course at your local community college or university and meet
your annual training requirements at the same time! Click here to learn more about
the various ECE degree programs offered through the Nevada System of Higher Education. |

| All informal, non-credit training must be approved by the Registry. |

Licensing
will only accept training certificates that have an official approval
code issued by The Nevada Registry. Before
taking any training, be sure to ask if the event has been approved by
the Registry. If not, ask the trainer to submit the training for approval.
Otherwise, the training will not count toward meeting your annual training
requirements!
Additional Note: Although
you may have taken a Registry approved training, it is advisable to
always check with your Licensing Representative to ensure that the
training you have taken is in compliance with the training requirements
outlined in the state child care regulations (i.e., taking approved
training doesn't guarantee that Licensing will accept all of those
hours). This applies to college courses as well - be sure to check
with Licensing to make sure the class you are taking will be accepted
to meet your specific training requirements. |

| Caring 4 Kids Update |

As of Feb. 2007 ALL CARING 4 Kids modules are being processed by the Office of Early Care and Education. Please mail your completed modules to: Connie Zeller, Office of Early Care and Education, 1020 Ruby Vista Drive, Suite 101, Elko, NV 89801. Direct all questions to czeller@dwss.nv.us. ALLOW 6-8 weeks for processing! Modules will not be expedited due to lack of planning. If you need to complete this training sooner than 6-8 weeks, visit the calendar to find a training near you. | Signs and Symptoms of Illness and First Aid Training |

Nevada
Licensing Regulations stipulate that Signs and Symptoms of Illness and
First Aid training be provided by a licensed health care professional.
Therefore, training in these specific topics (needed to meet initial
training requirements) cannot be completed via video, book, module, correspondence
course or internet class. |

| An important message about non-traditional training... |
| |
Non-traditional
training (modules, correspondence courses, and internet classes) is available
primarily to help meet the training needs of caregivers living in rural
areas of the state who have limited access to traditional training opportunities
(due to distance, limited availability, etc.).
When viewing approved non-traditional training on the website, you'll notice
that the number of hours that have been approved varies considerably. Please
note that although a training has been approved for a specific number of hours,
your Licensing Representative may only apply a certain portion of those approved
hours toward your annual training requirements. Always
check with your Licensing Representative when taking modules, correspondence
courses and internet classes to verify the number of hours that will count toward
meeting your annual training requirements. |
