CARSON CITY — An estimated 3,700 Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients in Washoe County and the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony may have lost food purchased with SNAP benefits due to the Bug and Stallion fires or related power outages. These individuals may request replacement SNAP benefits through August 28, 2026.

Federal program rules allow 10 days to report a food loss. However, the Division of Social Services (DSS) requested an extension from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Administration (FNA), which was approved. This allows affected SNAP recipients additional time to report their losses. Each request will be reviewed to determine eligibility and, if eligible, the amount of replacement benefits that may be provided.

SNAP recipients affected by the fires or related power outages can report their food loss by visiting a local DSS office or calling (775) 684-7200.

DSS extends its deepest sympathies to all Nevadans impacted by the fires and recognizes the hardship and uncertainty these communities are facing. DSS remains committed to doing everything it can to help affected individuals and families access available resources and assistance during this difficult time. Additional federal SNAP flexibilities will continue to be reviewed, and DSS will pursue all applicable options to support affected households.

Individuals who would like to apply for SNAP benefits can apply online through Access Nevada.
